Cancel Culture & Facebook: Could I Lose My Job?

We know that virtually all employees in America are at will employees, which means they can get fired for any reason. We also know that the first amendment doesn’t apply to the private sector, only the government.

But does this give companies the right to arbitrarily police their employees’ opinions over social media?

For this Millennial Minute, host David Grasso is joined with democratic strategist Max Burns, and author at St. Martin’s Press Alexandra Hudson to discuss this very heated question.

Hudson says that cancel culture is affecting corporations and the ability to speak out, and that this decreases company morale at best.

Burns says differently. He states that social media is still real life, and that with our pseudonyms and internet profiles we tend to forget we’re still real people expressing our real opinions.

Both Hudson and Burns agree that major corporations are very, very powerful in their abilities to hire and fire their employees at will, and worker protections are unfortunately limited. They also agree that corporations should have a code of conduct for their employees that can help prevent any arbitrary decisions made about employee termination based on a tweet or a Facebook post.
