4:50Now PlayingIt’s almost impossible to think of anything you could do in today’s world without thinking, “how could I make this look on social media?”
Instagram itself, surpassing 1 billion users in 2018 with ease, has completely transformed our day-to-day living. But just how great is that impact?
In this Bold Business segment, host Julia Sun talks to Sarah Frier, the woman who has dissected that thought, and the app, in her book, “No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram”. Here, Sun and Frier discuss just how different the world is because of the app.
Pros? Instagram has completely transformed entrepreneurship in the last decade. You are now able to build a business from the ground up without the typical gatekeepers. Not just influencers, but fitness instructors, motivational speakers, and bakers are all viable careers that Instagram can help you launch.
On the flip side, the algorithm and metrics of what you see when consistently scrolling (sometimes known as doomscrolling) can be incredibly harmful to your mental health. Not only that but the personal score of your likes and comments can lead to anxiousness and unhealthy comparisons.
In her book, Frier wanted to look at not just how the app works, but who is making the decisions, and why. And also what are the plans for the app and the people behind it?
Winner of the 2020 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award, and listed as Best Book of the Year by “Fortune”, “The Financial Times”, “The Economist, Inc. Magazine”, and NPR, “No Filter” is available for purchase here
