Why Black TikTok Creators Are On Strike

In the past year, TikTok’s popularity has skyrocketed. From challenges to dances, TikTok is popularizing trends. But now Black TikTok creators are on strike. Check out the video to learn more!

The most popular dances are created by Black TikTok creators. However, these Black TikTok creators aren’t getting the credit for these popular TikTok dances.

For example, the insanely popular TikTok dance, ‘Renegade’ was created by a 14-year-old aspiring choreographer, Jalaiah Harmon. As the ‘Renegade’ dance blew up in popularity, other TikTokers tweaked the choreography and never gave Jalaiah Harmon the credit. The most followed person on TikTok, Charli D’Amelio became the face of the dance instead.

In response to the growing popularity of the “Renegade” dance, the New York Times did a story on Jalaiah Harmon, which led to her meeting the artists K CAMP and performing at the 2020 All Star Game. Jalaiah Harmon also did a collab video with Addison Rae and Charli D’Amelio where they performed her original choreography of the ‘Renegade’ dance. Finally, Jalaiah Harmon got the credit she deserved.

However, recently Addison Rae went on the ‘Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ and performed many TikTok dances. Many criticized Jimmy Fallon for not inviting the original creators of the dances onto the show instead of Addison Rae, many of which were Black TikTok creators..

Now, Black TikTok creators are on strike. With Megan Thee Stallion’s songs, there has always been massively popular dances that were created to these songs like ‘Savage,’ ‘WAP’ and ‘Body.’ With her latest song, ‘Thot $*^!,’ the Black TikTok creators haven’t created a dance for it and no other dance has been created that has stuck.

Black TikTok creators are aware that they are not receiving the credit for their choreography and they are fed up. Without giving them credit, they are essentially not getting any money in their pocket for their choreography. TikTok creators Charli D’Amelio and Addison Rae are getting opportunities like talk show appearances, brand deals and doing commercials. Yet Black TikTok creators who are the originators of these dances are fighting to get recognized.

Black TikTokers have also expressed concern about the TikTok algorithm. They believe the TikTok algorithm is biased and leaves them out of the ‘For You’ page. The TikTok algorithm shows the viral version of the video rather than the originator’s video, while the viral videos do not credit the original choreographers.
