International Inc. CEO Philip Morris is making headlines after saying that the UK should ban smoking. International Inc. are the same people who make the wildly famous Marlboro cigarettes. They are saying that the future of their company is smoke free within the next 10 years.
But that doesn’t mean tobacco will go away. E-cigs and vape pens are here to stay. They are allegedly safer than cigarettes. Using these items are mainstream and more popular than ever, yet we’ve known for decades that smoking is bad for us.
How does banning things help? If we know anything about history, banning things isn’t always effective. When you ban something, it tends to produce a vibrant black market for the product. America’s campaign against drugs has not gone well so maybe encouraging people to stop smoking may be a better method.
