Joining Holland Haiis today is the CEO and Founder of Detinee Berman LLC, Destinee Berman. Destinee is a refugee from Vietnam who went to Silicon Valley and launched her own wildly successful business. We talk about knowledge-based companies and being a female entrepreneur.

Did being a refugee impact your decision to be an entrepreneur?

Destinee believes it is hard to pinpoint one reason especially since her parents were forced to become entrepreneurs when they were forced to create better lives for themselves. Since her parents had to figure it out on their own, Destinee was taught from childhood that there was power, freedom and potential in being an entrepreneur. They inspired her but Destinee had to figure out for herself if that path was for her.

What was Destinee’s experience as a woman of color in Silicon Valley?

When Destinee was working there, she worked at companies that didn’t make her feel too different, but looking back she acknowledges there were some groups and communities that she wasn't a part of. But at these companies she was able to lead marketing campaigns and where she got her start in digital marketing and media buying. At the time, Destinee says there weren’t many other women working there but she wasn’t worried about that but more about how to get work done and the results they wanted. She thanks her parents who told her to focus on those things even if she sometimes did wish she worked with more women.

Why do you think it’s important for women to start their own businesses?

Thanks to 2020, Destinee believes that we all learned that digital is the future. Between the creator economy, the knowledge industry and online education, there is a prime opportunity right now for women to create a knowledge-based business around their expertise and passions and hopefully be lucrative at it. After following Destinee’s advice, her clients are leading businesses that are having profits from six to seven figures a year from leading online courses. The opportunity and market exists and it’s just a matter of is entrepreneurship your path and do you want to create a business that is knowledge- and expertise-based?

What is next for Destinee and scaling her business?

Destinee says she is always thinking about how to take her company’s influence and results to the next level. So that entails growing the reach of her own online school and tapping into different industries so keynote speakers, professionals and so on. Now that people know there are all these opportunities in digital, she wants to help individuals from many industries. Destinee is also looking to develop her own book and do more speaking to get her message on monetizing your passions out there.

What will your book be about?

Currently, Destinee has three working book concepts. The books will be hitting the survival tendencies she grew up on and how she was able to create a business that was authentic to her while still fighting her inner monologue questioning if she will make it or if she will fail. She says she questions herself because she grew up in a poor family but also women deal with this when they have to deal with risk.

How did Destinee transition from Silicon Valley to being an entrepreneur?

The internal transition took many years and although she could practice some entrepreneurship skills in Silicon Valley, she took a 6-month break and developed her own business. She took the risk and it looks like it paid off!
