The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) changed the definition of the word astronaut on the same day that Jeff Bezos flew into space on his Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. The FAA has set up new guidelines for who qualifies as an astronaut.
Jeff Bezos did technically reach space because he went 62 miles above sea level and the FAA claims that space starts 50 miles above sea level. However, neither Jeff Bezos or Richard Branson, have not qualified for the commercial astronaut wings. The FAA says they did not earn this badge because they “have not demonstrated activities during flight that were essential to public safety, or contributed to human space flight safety.”
Does this make sense? Well, you’re not a chef if you make lasagna once or a sailor because you’ve been on a boat. Now, just because you’ve been to space, doesn’t mean you’re an astronaut?
