There's a lot of money being thrown around these programs, the most recent being Sirius XM's $150 million purchase of Conan O'Brien's podcasting company. Is there, however, still time to start your own podcast?
Over the last few years, prominent radio companies have been engaged in a podcasting arms race. Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Sirius XM, and iHeartMedia have all spent millions of dollars in an attempt to become the most popular podcasting network.
In addition, a slew of celebrities have launched their own podcasting companies and shows. I'm talking about everyone from Michelle Obama to Will Ferrell.
The market has now reached saturation. Today, there are more than 4.4 million podcasts available. Five years ago, there weren't even half a million of them.
So, what can you do to get your podcast started?
First and foremost, you must demonstrate that you are capable of doing so. No one will approach you on the street and determine you have a compelling story to tell. Create your own podcast solely to go through the motions and build a portfolio.
You should learn everything you can. So, while it may appear futile to be prepared when the opportunity arises, there is room in any field for hard work, ability, and commitment. If you made it this far without a network distributing your show, you'd be labeled an oddball.
However, as a result of this overabundance, consumers have a greater appreciation for quality information.
