China-Taiwan Tensions: The History and Potential Consequences Behind It All

In light of all the bizarre events currently taking place, many people are most concerned about a potential war between China and Taiwan.

Should we be concerned about that? The United States and the rest of the globe will be affected by China's invasion of this island nation.

Let's quickly review certain historical events in order to respond.

Taiwan was ruled by China for a few hundred years before it was occupied by Japan and then given back to China after the Second World War.

But then a civil war broke out as Mao's communist forces battled and defeated the ruling Nationalist Chinese Party, who then fled to Taiwan. And the two nations have been at odds ever since.

Naturally, Taiwan considers itself to be an independent nation. However, the Communist Party in power and the present president of China disagree. They have often threatened to annex Taiwan because they believe it to be theirs.

So what would occur if China took that action? Well, that would have a significant impact on the world economy.

Taiwan is the primary global producer of semiconductor chips.

Almost everything, including our phones, laptops, automobiles, aircraft, and medical devices, is powered by these processors. Taiwanese semiconductors are used by even the US military.

On paper, it now appears that China might rapidly terminate a war by obliterating Taiwan. China is the only nation outside of the US to spend more on defense, and it has a ground force that is ten times larger than Taiwan's, ten times as many fighter jets as Taiwan does, six times as many ships, and missile technology that Taiwan could only dream of.

Therefore, if China wants Taiwan so badly, why hasn't it taken action yet? Well, for one thing, it's quite difficult to launch an amphibious attack against a heavily fortified country like Taiwan.

While being fired upon, you must transport soldiers, armor supplies, and other cargo across the Taiwan Strait. Any military would find this tough to perform. especially one like China's that has not been tried.

Second, for more than 60 years, Taiwan has been preparing for a conflict with China.

This distinguishes it from, say, Ukraine, which has only existed as a nation for the past 30 years. The Chinese communist leaders are aware that any miscalculation in this struggle could spell their doom, which is the third and most crucial factor.

Whatever challenges Western sanctions are causing Russia, China's suffering is almost certainly going to be much worse.

China is entirely dependent on the outside world for food, energy, and reliable supply chains, in contrast to Russia, which is less globally linked and is a significant exporter of both food and oil.

There is every indication that NATO partners will act even more aggressively with China, starving the country and triggering an internal uprising if the CCP forcibly annex Taiwan.
