An electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, is one of the most existential risks to our society, according to some. What is it, though, and should we be concerned?
An EMP, which is simply a massive burst of electromagnetic energy, has the ability to destroy our electrical networks, plunge the whole nation—or even much of the world—into darkness, and wipe out up to 90% of mankind along with it.
Now this can happen in several ways. The most likely scenario is a mega solar storm, which already occurred in 1859 and destroyed the world's telegraph networks. This event was known as the Carrington Event. making them catch fire and possibly destroying the just installed, miles-under-the-ocean transatlantic cables.
Of course, the fact that the Carrington event took place in a time when people did not entirely rely on electricity to meet their requirements meant that the harm caused by it was limited.
But according to experts, if a Carrington Event occurred now, our electrical grids and the whole of contemporary civilization may also collapse.
In addition to the destruction of our fresh water and sewage systems, food supplies would spoil, gas pipelines would blow up, airplanes would crash, and all modes of transportation would be rendered inoperable.
NASA estimates that the likelihood of a major solar storm is 12% per decade, so this is something we should take seriously.
Solar storms aren't the sole threat to an EMP, though. A nuclear weapon explosion in space might also be used by an enemy state to conduct an EMP attack.
Many countries, including China, Russia, and even the reclusive state of North Korea, have the power to do this and trigger a nationwide blackout, according to EMP specialist Dr. Peter Pry.
But what's much more alarming is that a lone wolf terrorist is capable of carrying out an EMP attack. An EMP suitcase, which aren't that difficult to obtain, might be discharged by one person in close proximity to a substation with additional high voltage transformers. These are essential parts of our electrical system that assist in supplying electricity to our cities.
If you take one of them out, it will have a cascading effect that might cause the entire East or West coast of America to lose power.
In 2003, a tree branch accidentally touched a high-voltage electricity line, causing a days-long blackout in the Northeast.
Fortunately, there are steps we can do to demonstrate these doomsday scenarios.
For around $20 billion, experts say we could defend our most vital electricity infrastructure against an EMP attack.
