Is Nuclear Energy As Dangerous As Environmentalists Claim?

Nuclear energy is the most reliable, abundant, simple to create, and secure kind of energy that we currently have.

So why aren't there a lot more nuclear power facilities being built in the US?

Unfortunately, nuclear energy is much like Kanye West in our industry. It's enigmatic, misunderstood, and frequently generates headlines for the wrong reasons.

However, the truth is that nuclear energy is a wonderful resource that has a terrible reputation, largely due to misleading claims made by the media and environmentalists who oppose using it.

It's interesting to note that the same so-called environmental activists who are trying to ban fossil fuels on the grounds that oil and gas emit too much carbon and are also pushing to ban nuclear power.

Unlike wind and solar, these power plants are genuinely reliable, operating around-the-clock and independent of the weather, and they have nearly no carbon footprint.

Of course, the most frequent objection to nuclear power is that it is too risky, but this is utterly untrue.

Here are some details. A nuclear power plant accident has never resulted in a fatality in the free world.

The outdated and subpar Soviet Chernobyl Plant experienced a meltdown in the 1980s that resulted in about 50 fatalities.

But in the free world, there have only been two significant nuclear accidents: Three Mile Island in the United States and Fukushima in Japan, neither of which resulted in any fatalities.

To put things in perspective, around four million people each year pass away from household air pollution brought on by burning biomass at home for heating or cooking. And in comparison to technologies like wind and solar, nuclear actually does a better job of conserving wildlife and the environment.

According to studies, nuclear power facilities need 300–400 times more land than wind and solar projects do in order to produce the same quantity of electricity.

The truth is that without nuclear energy, you cannot have a consistent, dependable energy source or a clean planet. Perhaps it's about time we started to accept it.
