During the 80 Years War the Dutch used the Orange – White – Blue flag (a.k.a. the Prince’s Flag). After the conflict the flag was changed to Red – White –Blue. Why it changed? Some said it is because the orange paint would transform into red when being exposed to the sun for too long. Others argued the new colours were better visible on the sea.
At the end of the 18th century there was a conflict within the Netherlands between Orangists who used the Prince’s Flag and the State Party that used this one.
Later in the 1930s the Dutch national socialist party (NSB) used the Prince’s Flag and the Dutch queen Wilhelmina issued a royal decree to the solely usage of Red – White – Dark Blue flag.
