Several northern states have been directed by the center to ensure that dead remains are not disposed of in rivers. The center also encouraged governments in a letter to strengthen patrol along riverbanks to curb the practice, which appears to be spreading due to poverty and a lack of awareness. On May 28, a couple driving by the scene in Balrampur area shot the occurrence.
