Cottarelli is an Italian economist and a former director of the International Monetary Fund. At the IMF, he ran the Fiscal Affairs Department, providing advice in public finance matters to emerging and low-income economies. In 2018, he was designated caretaker Prime Minister of Italy, promising prudent fiscal management, but was ultimately unable to form a government.
