In her Instagram post before the Gala, AOC noted that “the medium is the message” quoting famous Communication scholar Marshall Mcluhan. She wore a provocative dress to one of the most elite parties in the world, pretty cool in my book.
But of course, the internet got into a tizzy over the dress that Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez wore to the Met Gala. The theme of this year’s gala was “American Independence,” and AOC put on a very tasteful display of what that theme meant to her. Some reactions can be summed up as “YASSS QUEEN” while many others “leftists” in the professional contrarian class had more critical things to say about it.
AOC’s dress was borrowed, and designed by a Black immigrant named Aurora James. Besides AOC, maybe one other person at the Gala was wearing a dress designed by a Black woman, despite the theme. Ms. James is also the founder of the 15 Percent Pledge, which challenges major clothing brands to devote 15% of their inventory to Black owned businesses.
Some others criticized AOC for attending the Gala at all, noting that tickets are upwards of $35,000 to attend. Unfortunately, these folks aren’t interested in reality. AOC posted before the Gala on Instagram about her ticket, telling her followers that “NYC elected officials are regularly invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing our city’s cultural institutions that serve the public.” Sorry haters, she got in for free!
