In recent budget negotiations, Congress stripped all remaining pandemic funding from the federal government, meaning that once its supply of COVID anti-viral drugs, as well as vaccines, run out, they’ll be gone. In effect, this means that the government will no longer subsidize the cost of healthcare for people with COVID.
The main reason that Congress removed funding for these programs was due to Republican objections. On the flip side, in a show of how strong bi-partisanship is in Washington, they all agreed to give Ukraine $800 million in extra munitions and weapons. Ukraine now has a functionally unlimited arsenal with which to fight Russian aggression, but if an American gets COVID there won’t be any money to make sure that the deadly and debilitating global pandemic doesn’t bankrupt them. Cool.
For years before the pandemic, experts were warning about just how unprepared we were. It seemed unthinkable that such a thing could happen, but then it did. Now, we’re repeating the exact same mistake, except this time there are almost a million dead Americans who died within the past two years from COVID. It has been said that the U.S. eventually does the right thing, but only after exhausting all the other options, but I don’t think we can even say that anymore. We’re exhausted!!!
