Lots of science fiction imagines a world where a conspiracy, or extremely devious individual, have outwitted all the “good people” in their quest for world domination or whatever. In comparison, our reality is usually way more incompetent and dumb than the fictional stories would leave us to believe.
The true conspiracies are also far more boring than the fictional ones. In our reality, a group of right-wing nationalists have plotted for decades to take over the judiciary through the use of money, conservative law school groups, and fancy dinner parties. Most people sit at home getting radicalized by Facebook groups and before you know it they’re buying shirts that say #WWG1WGA. Science fiction forgets the banality of evil and the idiocy of it.
