In a recent executive order, President Biden ordered (or strongly suggested) that doctors should not reveal confidential medical information under HIPAA, but is that enough to protect people in states without the right to choose?
It’s important that doctors be given this kind of guidance in the wake of the destruction of the protections granted in Roe v Wade. Before, it wasn’t exactly clear to medical providers whether they should be engaging in this kind of activity, so for it to now be in writing is an important mechanism for providing some level of care for pregnant and formerly pregnant people. The question is, are doctors actually going to protect their patients or will they cave to hospitals’ bottom lines and their lawyers?
There is still much more that needs to be done in order to protect the right to choose, and most of it should’ve been done 15 years ago. Democrats haven’t been able to muster the strength to protect the right to an abortion, and now we have to rely on the professionalism of doctors and the medical world to protect people whenever possible.
