6:14Now PlayingWhile most of the country was able to maintain Democratic gains and prevent a swing towards fascism, somehow the state with the most robust Democratic machine had the worst night overall (outside Florida). What the heck happened in NY?
New York state politics still lives in the shadow of its former governor, and current serial sexual harasser, Andrew Cuomo. While in power, Cuomo did everything possible to arrest the rise of the left, including conspiring with conservative Democrats to make sure that control of the state legislature rested with Republicans. This legacy lived on in 2022 with Cuomo appointed judges on the State Supreme Court sabotaging Democratic efforts to redistrict NY state into more solidly Democratic districts (though gerrymandering), and instead forcing the state to use a map much more favorable to Republicans.
Democrats in New York have a very strong organizational structure. This structure, in recent years, has seen the rise of folks like AOC or Julia Salazar as a direct threat to their power, and to the extremely pro-corporate status quo. These machine politicians have frozen the left out of power, and have used almost all of their time and resources fighting directly against it. It’s ironic, but the reason Dems did so poorly in New York is because everyone in the NYS Democratic Party is much more worried about maintaining their spheres of influence than they are advancing policy. GAH! In states where the Democratic Party was absolutely disintegrated during the Obama administration, things ironically went much better without party bosses looking out for their own pockets.
