What Will Republicans Do in the House? Rob From the Poor

Now that Republicans are confirmed to control the House of Representatives from 2023-2024, what will they use their majority to accomplish? Policy prescriptions from Republicans have been few and far between lately. Beside ‘ending cancel culture’ and getting rid of CRT, neither of which are actually real things to contend with, newly minted House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has given us some indications of what Republicans will actually try to accomplish.

As always, Republicans have their eyes on cutting so-called “entitlements” AKA basic social welfare. Republicans will work to cut Medicare, despite seniors being their most reliable voting demographic, as well as defund the newly operable IRS and possibly even cut or further privatize Social Security. Even though Republicans only control one level of power on the legislative level, expect them to leverage what little power they have with a return to the debt ceiling showdowns we all grew to love during the Obama Administration.

Even keeping regular government spending bills moving is going to be a challenge during the coming term. With such a tiny tiny majority, the smallest since the 1920s (!) Republicans will need incredible discipline in order to keep everything on track. This is much easier said than done, especially given the fresh crop of absolute cranks that constitute a clear majority of congressional Republicans. While they’re also promising a Hunter Biden witch hunt, who knows, they may spend most of their time trying to cut and stab each other behind closed doors.
