That’s a question that’s currently dominating Imperial County California, which has suffered from decades of under-investment, and the lingering effects of polluted rivers and groundwater. While this rare earth is incredibly important to “Green Energy” technology like batteries, farming it is an environmental hazard all on its own.
California might have the largest untapped Lithium deposits in the entire world, and the good news is that climate change is making it all the much more possible to mine, now that these deposits are much more accessible due to a lake drying up. Lithium, right now, is one of the most important rare earths on the planet, due to its major function in the battery technology that is under girding the shift to “renewable” sources of energy.
