Dealing with the American Healthcare system, with its ever-changing maze of insurance companies, healthcare providers, covered and uncovered medical care, and the whole Byzantine bonanza is not something that’s unique to pregnant people, or people expecting children. It is, however, exceptionally terrible and stressful to be trying to bring new life into this world, something almost everyone recognizes as a good or positive thing, only to pay through the teeth for each and every tissue you use ($12/each) and aspirin you take ($450/pill) while you’re in the hospital (those numbers are made up).
The vast majority of people in America are an unexpected $400 expense away from total bankruptcy. This is also the country that charges people a tax to a private company (some know this as a premium) in order to receive healthcare that won’t cost the same amount as the moon landing. What’s worse, most of the time that “tax” won’t even go towards your actual medical expenses, and may not even be relevant to the type of medical procedure done to you.
This country bends over backwards to degrade poor people. Can’t afford a car? Well, we don’t even want you to have sidewalks (a lot of the time). Can’t afford a monthly healthcare premium? Looks like you’ll definitely be able to afford the emergency room bill that is functionally inevitable after years of neglect. Don’t have a job that provides you with healthcare? Best of luck getting something on the open market, which you definitely have the capacity to fully understand and appreciate as a normal person.
