5:42Now PlayingCrime is going down almost everywhere, except in the minds of suburban voters. In the recent election, the only states who experienced anything amounting to the “Red Wave” Republican elites had been promising were Florida and New York. To discuss crime in New York, both real and imagined, we brought on NYC based public defender, and prison abolition advocate Olayemi Olurin on the program to break it down.
People in New York have thoroughly digested the idea that crime is currently spiking, and that they should be afraid enough to want to throw everyone in prison. New York Democrats were incredibly good at pushing back against the rhetoric of more left-wing candidates like India Walton, and other reform minded candidates. After ruthlessly suppressing the left in the state, the only thing NY Democrats could do is champion the status quo, meanwhile Republicans were able to offer an alternative, even if the alternative is cruel and brutal.
While all of this is going on in the minds of people who live in the state, the casual horror of pre-trial detention continues on Rikers Island, and other prisons. People are being held almost indeterminately, for incredibly petty reasons, and with incredibly destructive consequences on their life outcomes.
Olayemi Olurin is a public defender at the Legal Aid Society, political commentator, writer, and abolitionist thinker.
