The festival can cost big bucks. It can also cost your sanity. Last week in Black Rock City, thousands of ‘Burners’ got stuck in a muddy mess as two-months’ worth of rainfall dropped in 24 hours at the annual music festival.
While Marjorie Taylor Greene saw the biblical flood as divine intervention for the notoriously crazy festival, others saw it as climate change making herself heard. Even before the rain, festival goers were met with protestors from Extinction Rebellion, who were calling for the event to cease allowing private jets, single-use plastics, and unlimited generator and propane use. If Burners didn’t listen then, maybe they’ll listen now after facing the wrath of mother nature.
Thousands were left stranded on the festival grounds and were told to conserve water and food. While some sheltered in place as they were told, others tried to escape either by foot or by vehicle. Among them were Chris Rock, Diplo, actress Tessa Thompson, and Obama-administration alum Neal Katyal. Maybe they’ll learn not to build a city in the desert next year (but probably not).
