Turns out funding wars abroad actually isn’t popular. Someone should tell our government.
It’s hard to believe that during George W. Bush there was a real antiwar movement in this country. But that movement failed to catalyze into lasting political power. As protesters came out against Bush and the Republicans in 2003, they also helped elect Democrats to office who promised to end the War on Terror like Barack Obama. But truly turning away from the military industrial complex toward a new vision of foreign policy is characterized as being anti-American, and most Democrats cave to the pressure of being seen as “weak”.
Twenty years later, Americans still don’t approve of their country’s meddling in wars. A recent poll found that a plurality of Americans — 41% — believe the United States is doing too much to support Ukraine. A similar poll found that “Americans give President Joe Biden a negative 42-49 percent approval rating on his handling of the response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” In Gaza, a poll found 50% of Democrats approve of how Biden has navigated the conflict while 46% disapprove.
But for Democratic voters under 45 and nonwhite Democrats, a whopping 65% and 58% respectively, disapprove of Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war. Coming up on an election year, Democrats should rethink their love of conflict in order to build a winning coalition.
