The border deal is dead, long live the border deal. After decades of Democrats offering Republicans a trade of harsher immigration penalties in exchange for a pathway to citizenship (for some undocumented immigrants), a new deal that would’ve given Republicans everything on their wishlist (with no real positive concessions) has died after Trump told Republicans to spike it. The bill was negotiated in secret for months, and would’ve given President Biden a Trumpian wishlist of new authorities to crack down on the manufactured crisis at the U.S. Mexico border.
Democrats had hoped to concede on everything immigration in order to prop up the Ukrainian and Israeli regimes in their ongoing conflicts. The deal would’ve sent billions in arms and goods to both nations, a sticking point for Republicans who have begun to sour on supporting the Ukrainian military. Earlier this week, Republicans attempted to pass a narrow bill that would’ve purely sent money to Israel, but this was voted down by the House and declared dead on arrival in the Senate (in the event that it did pass). Since the failure of this latest bipartisan immigration deal, leaders in both chambers have signaled that they will attempt to pass another bill to fund the Israeli destruction of Palestine and the Ukrainian war against Russia.
Meanwhile, President Biden is trying to turn all of this into a campaign talking point, blaming Trump for refusing to ‘secure the border’, when the bill is an authoritarian wishlist that any sane Democrat should reject.
