After Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s legendary 2018 primary victory, she had to make a choice.
Once she was elected that year, she became part of an informal group of four known as The Squad: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley. These elected officials have been targeted relentlessly by the group known as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC.
In the elections and midterms to follow, the Israel lobby became the largest single-issue outside spender in Democratic primaries, spending nearly $30 million on their superpac to advance Israel’s interests in the United States. Most of this money was used to primary progressive candidates out of the race.
However, even before AIPAC became the behemoth that it is, AIPAC tried to get ahead of AOC and offered her campaign $100,000 in contributions to “start the conversation.” She turned them down. We spoke with Ryan Grim about his account of this story in his new book ‘The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution’. According to Grim, Ocasio-Cortez saw AIPAC as one of the special interests whose influence she was running against, and because of her on the ground organizing experience and fundraising, she didn’t want or need the money.
How different would politics today be if she had taken it?
