The elite consensus around Joe Biden appears to be weakening. Despite most liberal commentators being completely on board for another term of Joe Biden’s presidency, a few notable liberal commentators have broken from that consensus. Ezra Klein and Nate Silver, both respected among liberals for different things, have both come out in support of Joe Biden dropping out of the presidential race in favor of someone younger and more dynamic.
According to Klein, while the public support for Biden seems rock solid, this isn’t so much the case among people who work in partnership with the White House. Among Democratic staffers, there are significant doubts that Biden is the man for the moment. From the analytical side, Nate Silver is pointing out the obvious trends in polling: Joe Biden is significantly less popular than his party overall, and that voters largely prefer someone else.
Biden has lost the Democratic primary more than just about anyone else alive, seeing as he has run for president almost every cycle since the 80s, and by all accounts really abhors the idea that he can’t win, despite any evidence to the contrary. Isn’t it so fun to live in a country where one person’s ego could hand the White House to a fascist? It might be 2024, but it’s giving 2016.
