Republicans in Alabama, and across the country, are currently scrambling. Abortion rights advocates have been warning for years that should Roe v Wade be overturned, the same bans would soon be coming for fertilization treatments such as In vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF is a treatment sought by people who WANT to be pregnant. But if ‘life begins at conception’ according to the far right, any embryo frozen or not is clearly fair game to abide by their ridiculous rules.
But indeed an Alabama court ruling found that frozen embryos were effectively children! Within days of the ruling, basically the entire state’s network of IVF related facilities were shuttered. Those currently receiving IVF were left completely helpless, losing years of expensive and progress on a usually taxing process.
In response, Republican legislatures across the country have spoken out and moved quickly to pass legislation that would allow IVF to continue. Under rulings like Alabama's, the first such nationwide, people who work with IVF could be charged with wrongful death of a minor or murder.
