The Supreme Court is about to decide on a major case this summer which could criminalize sleeping on the street. The case, Grants Pass v Jonhnson, which was heard at the high court this April, is trying to overturn a statue that protects the rights of homeless people with nowhere else to go.
Recently, the town of Grants Pass, which has no public homeless shelters, began fining people for sleeping outside with a blanket, imposing fines at $180. Homeless residents filed a lawsuit against the city which has found its way to the Supreme Court. One of the original plaintiffs in the case against the city actually had over $5,000 in penalties before she passed away.
“Where do we put them if every city, every village, every town lacks compassion and passes a law identical to this, where are they supposed to sleep?” asked Sotomayor in April. “Are they supposed to kill themselves not sleeping?”
If the Supreme Court overturns the current protections, the ripple effects could be disastrous for those the most vulnerable sleeping on the streets each night and encourage other cities to institute crueler punishments for the unhoused.
