As Israel tries to insulate itself from any ramifications of its ceaseless assault on the people of Gaza, we’re learning just how far they’ve gone to prevent accountability for their actions. Thanks to an investigative piece by +972 magazine, we now know that a top Mossad agent by the name of Cohen waged a years-long campaign of intimidation and spying against the former head of the ICC, Fatou Benzouda. According to the report, Cohen tried to stop Benzouda from opening a case against the Israeli officials and had been trailing her since 2015. The ICC ultimately determined that this took place in the form of harassment: calling her, listening to her phone calls, taking pictures of her and her husband, and surprising her with meetings.
According to +972, Mossad agent “Yossi Cohen, personally attempted to ‘enlist’ Bensouda and manipulate her into complying with Israel’s wishes, according to sources familiar with his activities, causing the then-prosecutor to fear for her personal safety.” But Bensouda wasn’t the only ICC official who was trailed. The surveillance operation also spied on dozens of others who work in international law.
This shocking story is barely getting any mainstream news coverage, and Israel will likely not face any consequences for their behavior. So long as the United States keeps trusting Israel to investigate itself whenever it commits a clear war crime, and continues to send money and weapons Tel Aviv’s way, this is just another blip in the broad tapestry of outrageous behavior from that government.
