16:00Now PlayingThe International Criminal Court (ICC) could soon issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, defense minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas leaders.
Within the next months, a panel of three judges will decide whether to issue the warrants and proceed with the case, but it could happen as early as this week. Since Israel is not a member of the ICC, an arrest warrant wouldn’t threaten Netanyahu and Gallant within their own country. However, the threat of arrest could make it difficult for them to travel abroad.
In the meantime, Netenyahu is traveling to the United States to give a speech to a joint session of Congress. While House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer are signing off on the visit, other congresspeople including Rep. Nancy Pelosi are ringing warning bells.
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, said that the Prime Minister didn't speak to the White House about the speech. Even though Netanyahu isn’t necessarily in danger of arrest while visiting the US, the US also does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, many politicians are pointing out it’s not a great look.
