“Are you still awake? I can’t sleep…” read one. “Would you still love me if I’m arrested?” read another. With his increasing legal costs, Trump is not afraid to beg his loyal followers to flood his campaign with cash.
The strategy may work, Trump’s plan of campaigning as a convicted felon has resulted in $141 million raised in May, that’s nearly double what Biden and the DNC have raked in. Notably, however, Trump has increasingly relied on larger donors ($200 or more) while Biden has built his campaign on small donations. Trump’s dollars from businessmen and PACs are not exactly a grassroots effort.
Moreover, even if his conviction is convincing individual people to open and respond to these desperate fundraising emails, his conviction is also proof to others that Donald Trump seriously committed crimes, which should count for something… right?
