Ryan from Canada calls in as a "soft theist" with a simple premise: God doesn't reveal himself because he values faith. What follows is a 30-minute unraveling. Matt and Justin push Ryan on why faith would be more valuable than direct information, why free will requires ignorance of God's existence, and whether believing something you admit is unjustified can bring genuine comfort. Ryan acknowledges he can't justify most of his positions — and eventually admits that he holds onto belief because he wants to see his deceased mother again. Matt, whose father had just come out of cancer surgery that day, responds with candor and empathy before delivering his hardest verdict: Ryan isn't interested in truth, he's interested in feeling good. Justin closes by noting that Ryan still has his fingernails sunk into something he's not quite ready to let go of — and promises it's going to be okay when he does.
