as posted by the channelTwice each year, Earth crosses the Taurid meteor stream - once in late October, giving rise to what some researchers call the Halloween meteors, and once again in the southern Taurids shortly after. This is not a random encounter. It is a predictable, recurring passage through one of the solar system's most significant debris fields.
The mechanics matter. As incoming meteors approach the sun, they accelerate - drawn in by gravity and moving faster the closer they get. They make their closest passage, the perihelion, then begin moving outward again. At that point the sun's gravity works against them, slowing their exit. The result is an asymmetric stream with varying densities and velocities depending on where Earth intersects it.
The question researchers are now asking is not whether we cross this stream. We know we do. The question is whether we are approaching a particularly dense and dangerous section of it.
