Joining Julia Sun today is AJ Swinson, Chief of Staff for the New Journey PAC, and Georgia Gilholy, Contributor for Young Voices.
There are benefits to unpaid internships, but we would rather not work for free. What are those benefits? Do they outweigh the cons?
AJ Swinson speaks from experience. She was an intern for the Press Secretary and Communications Director in the US Congress, and she worked long, hard hours. Would she have preferred to get paid? Yes. Does she think a company should pay its interns if they can afford it? Also, yes.
AJ Swinson also believes that companies should be able to give as much experience to youth in as productive of a way that’s possible. For AJ, her unpaid internship landed her her first job out of college working for the Press Secretary and Communications Director, and she wouldn’t have got that job if she didn’t take this unpaid internship.
Georgia Gilholy agrees with AJ! She took an unpaid internship while she was in college, and it has benefitted her greatly. She also agrees that exploitation should be reprimanded, and doesn’t need to happen, and that needs to be approached on a case by case basis. Context matters.
Any advice to millennials and gen z when they’re offered an unpaid internship?
Georgia Gilholy really says that it depends on a case by case basis, and it all depends on planning ahead of time. Planning ahead will help you look at where it’s possible to make money working jobs on the weekends, for instance, if it’s possible.
