“The Welder,” an independent horror film by David Liz, was filmed entirely in Miami. It opened at the 2021 Popcorn Frights Film Festival in South Florida.
Manuel Delgadillo, a writer of “The Welder,” tells us that the movie began as a childhood memory since his father is a welder. Delgadillo would visit his father in his welding shop and he would see him in his mask and it would remind him of a boogeyman. “Years later, I thought about this idea” of a dangerous welder, said Delgadillo.
The movie touches on serious and sensitive topics like racism. “We’re all red inside,” says “The Welder” actor Vincent De Paul. He believes this is the main message of the film. Regardless of our race, creed, sexuality, and so on, we all have our own drama and full lives.
David Liz, the director, is a Miami native and shot this film in Miami during the pandemic on a tight schedule. He wanted the film to be meaningful but also entertaining. “I think this film, what it’s really trying to get to at its core, is that we need more unity in this world,” Liz proclaims. He wants to forget about all the arbitrary labels we have put on each other.
The film features local actors who found inspiration in this film’s message. Both leads loved taking part in the film and hope people enjoy the movie and the important message of hope behind it. The film will be screening at more film festivals around the world and will be released sometime in 2022.
