We are throwing out way too much food. Each year, billions of pounds of food is wasted each year in the US. $161 billion of food waste a year. What makes it worse, a lot of this food has nothing wrong with it.
Besides eating your leftovers, there are other ways to reduce your food waste. There are loads of programs that repurpose foods that restaurants and grocery foods aren’t allowed to sell. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has some programs.
Does your favorite shop or restaurant dispose of food the right way? There’s also a program called Imperfect Foods, which sells produce that grocery stores took off the shelf. The food itself isn’t bad but was removed because it wasn’t ripe enough, didn’t have the proper shape, or had damaged packaging.
Reducing food waste isn’t just about money but that when we throw away food we waste the fuel, water, energy, and time it took to make that food.
What else can we do to cut down on food waste? Let us know in the comments below!
