This past weekend, YouTuber Jake Paul took on former UFC Champion, Tyron Woodley. They had 8 rounds and a sold out arena. If you believe the projections, former UFC Champ Tyron Woodley is set to make his highest payday from this faux boxing match.
But many boxers have complained that YouTubers are encroaching on their territory and making all this money, while they have been doing this their entire life.
Is it unfair? No. Philip believes that these YouTubers are bringing a new audience to the sport of boxing. Paul is bringing more viewers and is increasing ad revenue for the sport.
WWE coined this idea of “sports entertainment.” All sports are “sports entertainment” because you are providing a presentation that is consumed by an audience in exchange advertisers want a piece of the pie. According to the viewer, this is just entertainment. With money involved, it’s all about entertainment and presentation.
Of course, it shouldn’t go as far as writing out the outcome of the sporting event, but we’ve all seen referees make questionable judgements. Maybe they want a certain more popular team to go to the finals but who knows their true motivations.
Back to Jake Paul, he brings many eyeballs to these boxing events with his 20 million + subscribers on YouTube and then there are all his followers on social media platforms. He brings the new audiences and then actually competes, which then creates a spectacle that is talked about on platforms like Bold TV.
