According to CNBC, there were 11.5 million job opportunities in construction, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing, with record-high quits. People's attitudes on work are altering as a result of the Great Resignation.
People have been contemplating how and why they work since the shutdown in 2020. People are leaving these professions because they are not in their preferred sectors, they are burned out, or they do not believe in the company's mission.
So, when will businesses be able to fill their workforce gaps? They must be able to accommodate the new generation of employees.
What are the common threads among the industries with record-high levels of employee turnover? Construction, hospitality, and manufacturing all require you to be on your feet and in person for the entirety of the day. There are few opportunities for remote work, and most positions do not require a college diploma.
The next generation of workers prefers to work from home. In fact, according to ADP Research Institute, 64% of workers had either looked for a new job or would consider doing so if their current employment required them to return to work full-time. And because this generation of employees has racked up trillions of dollars in debt to obtain college degrees, they want to find jobs that allow them to put their education to use.
Will these industries, however, be left without employees? Not at all. Artificial intelligence could fill up the slack as the workforce shifts away from in-person and labor-intensive employment. As a result, jobs that the workforce deems unsuitable for humans may be given to robots.
