9:39Now PlayingGovernor Mark Dayton released on Monday, May 16, two alternative funding options, both of which attempt to raise $6 billion dollars over 10 years for roads and bridges and another $2.8 billion dollars over 10 years for transit. Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk and Senate Transportation Chair Scott Dibble meet with the media about Dayton's plans.
While both of the Governor's proposals would use $200 million dollars per year from the General Fund, the differences begin with one proposal imposing a 5 cents per gallon gas tax increase to raise $150 million dollars. The second proposal does not raise gas taxes but imposes higher vehicle tabs to garner $400 million dollars per year rather than the $250 million dollars set in the proposal containing the gas tax increase.
Both proposals also raise the metro area sales tax by one-half cent to fund transit projects in the metro area.
