Or will the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill (BIF) be the last piece of legislation that is passed under a government with full Democratic control of the executive and legislative branches? Gulp.
Although BIF passed last week, 6 members of the so-called “squad” voted against it. Jamaal Bowman, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all voted against it because its passage represented the breaking of the foundational promise of the Biden legislative agenda: passing BIF and the BBB act in tandem, not separately. With BIF now through the House and Senate, progressives have almost no leverage in future BBB negotiations.
The fact that these progressive stood up for their principles, and wanted leadership to honor their initial deal, has been enough for corporate Democrats and corporate media to brand them as whiny brats who don’t want to get anything done. If you’ve been paying attention, you know the opposite is true.
