8:02Now PlayingWhy did people love FDR? Was it because he made good speeches over the radio, or is it because he delivered social welfare programs that improved the material conditions of the dispossessed and out-of-work working class? No, it was definitely the fireside chats.
Democrats, especially since the recent disappointing election results in places like Virginia, are running scared. People don’t feel like Democrats are competently managing the economy, or materially improving their lives anymore (if they ever did). In response, some Democrats think it's time to get more racist in order to appeal to white suburbanites who definitely aren’t going to vote Republican regardless.
How about instead Democrats try something they haven’t done since at least L.B.J’s Great Society, or even something as transformative as The New Deal? Their corporate donors would likely never allow it, but the real way to make people feel like stakeholders in the Democratic party, and the country more generally, is to give them a stake in the system and therefore a reason to support it. There’s lots of ways to do that, but if Democrats are going to cling to power and hopefully repel another Trump presidency, it’s basically the only thing they can do, but that doesn’t mean they’ll actually do it.
