How did Trump change Border Patrol? In some ways, nothing changed. In other meaningful ways, things went from terrible to cartoonishly evil. When the policy of separating children from their parents on the southern border came into full view, our guest and former Senior Border Patrol Agent Jenn Budd began to speak out. She called on her former colleagues to hang up their badges and quit.
The militarization of the southern border with Mexico had been a gradual process, starting with Carter erecting the first “border wall,” and growing in size and scope with each successive Republican and Democratic administration. Obama was the “deporter in chief” during his presidency, and even Trump struggled to surpass his deportation numbers. Still the cruelty of U.S. immigration changed for the worse under Trump.
Years ago, people who were picked up by Border Patrol were held for a few hours for processing before being released with a court date. Now, people are held in warehouses for weeks, fenced off like cattle, and subject to the cruel whims of their armed camp guards. Under Trump, the families that were held in these conditions were also broken apart, with young children separated from their parents.
Jenn Budd is a former Border Patrol Agent turned whistleblower, activist, and author. Her upcoming book Against The WallMy Journey From Border Patrol Agent to Immigrant Rights Activist, exposes the institutional corruption, misogyny and racism of the most corrupt federal agency in the United States. It will be out in June from Heliotrope Books. Follow her on Twitter
