While housing insecurity and houselessness can be caused in part by a wide array of environmental, mental, or physical conditions, the “obvious not obvious” cause of houselessness is simply not having a home.
While addiction, mental health, or an unsafe home environment could precipitate houselessness, it’s more often a lack of work and inability to pay rent. As our guest describes, addiction and mental health issues can arise as a result of homelessness. While the shelter system exists, it is often inadequate and the bureaucracy one must navigate to access services often makes them prohibitive. There’s a simple and obvious solution to all of this: build houses, and give them to people who need it.
Even if you solved all the addiction crisis, all the mental health crises, and everything else, there would still be homelessness. It is a massive systemic failure. The solution is not to make people take “personal responsibility” for factors far beyond their control, it’s to give them the resources they need to get back on their feet.
