6:56Now PlayingHow can the left push for diplomacy with China at the state level, and solidarity with Chinese people at the grassroots? It’s not an easy question to answer.
Russia’s brutal war on Ukraine has got a lot of folks thinking about another supposed rival nation: China. Sadly, the U.S. doesn’t seem to be softening its fairly antagonistic stance towards China. Between Trump’s “china virus” and trade rhetoric, to President Biden’s continued warnings about the threat of the country’s prominence in the world, it’s hard to see how we de-escalate what feels like one-sided fear-mongering. The left should invariably be arguing against a war on or belligerence towards China. Especially when U.S. corporations spent decades shipping jobs abroad at the expense of American working people and the environment. Now we’re supposed to hate the country?!
But on a grassroots level, we know that China’s policies towards the millions of Uigyurs who live in effective internment camps, as well as the government’s treatment of protesters in places like Hong Kong are indeed anti-democratic and totalitarian. So progressives should absolutely look for ways to stand in solidarity with the people of China, without playing into any warhawk narrative from Democrats or Republicans.
