You may remember a video of one of the robot pups getting kicked around a few years ago, now they are back with a vengeance. These “dogs” are already being used in all sorts of ways across the globe, from shouting Covid-19 quarantine orders in Shanghai, scanning the homeless for fevers in Hawaii and assisting firefights in New York City, it really is a workers’ market!
More frighteningly, however, these expensive robots have been making the military and police expo circuits and are being embraced by cops, the national guard and now those policing our borders. Announced this February, robot dogs are going to be giving U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) a helping hand “paw”. The creatures are said to scan the desert landscape, transmit video, and inspect cargo using different cameras and sensors mounted on their backs. But the press release also brings in the possibility of the dogs encountering “potentially hostile individuals” and highlights their ability to “move through hallways, and peer around corners, as well as navigate stairs.” Creepy!
