While so many– Republicans and Democrats alike– typically point the finger at problems that are ultimately questions of personal responsibility, being lazy, or suffering from addiction, the reality is that homelessness is driven by a lack of housing supply.
The United States suffers from an acute lack of housing that people can actually afford. Instead of building housing for people to live in, oftentimes developers are incentivised to build luxury apartments and luxury houses that serve as an asset on some rich dude’s portfolio instead of a place for a family to start a life.
This problem was only exacerbated by the 2008 housing crisis, and no steps to fix it have emerged so things have only gotten worse. After 2008, many developers went bottom up, and folded completely, depressing housing stock for the rising generation. If policy makers want to solve homelessness, they need to start by making housing a right, and not a privilege. In this society, if you lack housing, you lack the ability to do just about anything.
Gregg Colburn is an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington's College of Built Environments. He studies housing policy, affordable housing, and homelessness and he is the coauthor of Homelessness Is a Housing Problem, out now through UC Press.
