Elon Musk has often used Twitter as his own personal diary: from schoolyard jokes to grand business pronouncements to hawking his cryptocurrency. Now, the founder of Tesla and worth $270 billion recently purchased a near 10% stake in Twitter, earning him $150 million more and making him the shareholder with the largest stake in the social media company. Initially it looked as if he was also going to be on the 11-person board of Twitter, but Musk has since dropped that idea.
Still, he has not relinquished his rights to influence the company and has tweeted about changes he would like to see. Including his obsession with the idea of "free speech." The right, including lawmakers like Senator Rand Paul are heralding the purchase by Musk as they must assume this means that Trump will be back on inciting violence in no time.
But why does Elon really want to own a piece of Twitter? The answer may lie in his long-running feud with the SEC, which has tried to prevent the billionaire from using the platform to put run on his own business endeavors.
Musk has gotten into trouble with the financial regulatory agency for sending out tweets that claim things like "Tesla will be going private" and then not actually following through but merely inflating the stock price.
