Last week, a Trump appointed Florida Judge, who was rated as “not qualified” by the American Bar Association during her appointment, struck down the federal mask mandate on all public transportation and airlines. Within hours of this expansive ruling, airline companies and pilots began announcing that they would no longer enforce the mandate on flights nationwide.
Upon hearing the news, the Biden Administration initially announced that it would not appeal the ruling, and would allow mask mandates to end. The CDC was still reviewing their mask guidelines given the new BA2 Variant and the fact that Covid cases have been slowly rising.
While Biden says he still recommends that folks wear masks when in crowded spaces, it’s entirely up to our own individual decisions. Many flights also began to announce that customers who had been banned from flying due to poor mask behavior would also be allowed to return under certain circumstances.
For months, the airline industry had been lobbying the Biden administration to change the rules. Earlier in the pandemic, the airline industry was instrumental in lowering the mandatory COVID quarantine from 10 days to 5 days, and now they’ve won another victory on the road towards “normalcy.” Once again, these flights do not check vax cards whatsoever. And what we don’t see in the videos of people cheering are the million Americans who have died from COVID, and the countless more with long COVID related disabilities. Le sigh.
