In the aftermath of the horrific attack in Buffalo last week, we’re all left with the familiar feelings of despair and helplessness that we’ve grown accustomed to with mass shooting after mass shooting, but the vile racism that accompanied this episode of mass violence is still deeply disturbing.
The Buffalo shooter was an 18-year old who was apparently radicalized towards White Supremacy during his down time during the pandemic. He claims “boredom”…wow. The shooter parroted “The Great Replacement Theory”, a white nationalist idea, and used plenty of language in his “manifesto’ that would be standard in a flagship show on Fox News.
Should Fox News bear any responsibility for this gruesome violence? Tucker Carlson certainly wasn’t the one driving hours to a Black supermarket, or pulling the trigger, but his presence and his ideas permeated the shooter and their manifesto. But his rhetoric and that of the internet are a conservative feedback loop of hatred that no one quite knows how to cut off. Francesca has some ideas.
